Song Reviews

J Holiday – Be With Me
When I first heard “Be With Me”, I knew instantly it would be the 2nd single from his album. Imagine my disappointment when his label decided to release “Suffocate”. However, I understand why since the song was actually released in 2006 with little fanfare. The song is produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and plays wonderfully with J Holiday’s smooth vocals. Even though the subject matter has been played out since Joe’s first album, you know you should be with me and not him, I still find myself listening to it repeatedly.

Alicia Keys – Sure Looks Good to Me
Oh Alicia! You’ve been listening to The Beatles, Janis Joplin, and Joe Cocker. The song sounds like it could be the theme song for The Wonder Years. Not necessarily an awful thing, but I’m afraid Linda Perry may not be letting you on her influences. I still love Sure Looks…it takes me back to the late 60’s where freedom meant everything and music was the driving force behind it. Alicia may not have been around during that time period, but she sure does channel it with pure passion.

Ledisi – Get To Know You
Remember when D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, and Angie Stone ruled the neo-soul sound in the late 90’s. This is where Ledisi fits in. “Get to Know You” simply follows in that sweet tradition. It’s laid back, poetic, and has a melody that’s easy to tag along. Immediately after listening to this joint, you’ll turn to Jill for a carry-over to satisfy the mood.

Carl Thomas – Somethin Bout You (Feat. Brandy)
There are so many things that I enjoy about this cut from Carl Thomas’s latest album. It could be Brandy’s smoldering background vocals, that hypnotic beat, or the way Carl weaves in and out vocally halfway through the song. It’s such a hot track, just too bad he won’t receive that same attention as kats half his age.

Lil Mo – No Hotel
Did you know that Lil Mo released an album? I didn’t either and like Carl Thomas, she left her big label Elektra and went independent. No Hotel is an in-yo-face cut about the fellas who stay around your place from time to time. Lil Mo sings it fiercely…

because it’s not like u live here
u just stay from time 2 time
and even though u can get in
ur key ain’t gonna work tonight.

I haven’t heard such direct lyrics since Beyonce’s Irreplaceable.
